Arthritis is a common cause of pain in older people. The most common type of arthritis is called osteoarthritis, or degenerative joint disease. Because the cartilage in the joints is breaking down, the bones begin to rub against each other, causing, stiffness, loss of movement in the joint, and sometimes serious, disabling pain.
